Nocturnal flower no.1 : Digital printed and carved on the surface, with frame. When I participated in an artist-in-residence program at Koganecho Bazaar, Yokohama, Japan, I met a Thai migrant worker "Nid". Yokohama was once a destination where Thai people came to work, so Nid took be to the Thai neighbourhood, which has now been transformed into an art district. Yet, what outlives these buildings are trees and flowers surrounding the area as if they are symbols of past-present connection. Although I rarely found traces of Thai migrant workers in Yokohama, I still had these trees and flowers. They acted as an agent, bearing witness to the stories of the city. I decided to take a photo of flowers and trees around the place. Then I used an engraving technique, carving the surface of the photo in order to emphasize the roles of these flowers and plants. They are the ones who record human histories in their way.

Thailand
Prapat Jiwarangsan (b.1979,Bangkok) I am a visual artist from Thailand. I have a strong background in interdisciplinary art and research. I was trained in ceramics and glassmaking, but after studying at London's Royal College of Art, I have shifted my artistic practice to focus on fine arts. In my creative explorations, I usually incorporate a variety of media, especially photography and video, in order to investigate and represent the relationships between history, memory, and politics in Thailand—particularly in relation to the theme of migration. In the past four years, I have researched and developed a practice that explores the experience of migrant workers outside of their home countries. I see my work as a platform for artist, viewers and migrant workers to communicate and learn from each other. My installations have appeared in Bangkok, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Gwangju while my videos have screened at international film events such as Canada’s Images Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Experimenta India, and Onion City Experimental Film and Video Festival. Between 2012 and 2015, I worked as a full time lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University. Currently, I am an independent artist, and I am based in Bangkok. http://www.prapat-jiwarangsan.com
