The title of the work "This is not Malevich's black square" shows the intention of Saro Brancato to recall modern art from the past, citing two important artists: Renè Magritte and Kasimir Malevic. Magritte is connected with the title of his famous surrealist painting "This is not a pipe" of 1928; while Malevich is the author of the famous supremacist painting "Black square on a white background" of 1915, in which the artist has eliminated any reference to nature and reality, a sort of reset of the art of his time, of zero point of the painting. In my work, Malevich's square still imposes its rigorous essentiality, and is compared with a frivolous floral background, that is, with its opposite. It seems, however, that the banality of kitsch decoration is opening a gap on the black field of the square and perhaps soon it will invade it until it disappears, like the vegetation of the jungle that swallows Cambodian temples, in the atavistic clash between Nature and Civilization. Perhaps this work means that the "archaic" time of modern art is now over and there is something new going on. Advance and phagocyte. Advances and destroys? Or, are we on a completely opposite side?, where there is an attempt of peaceful coexistence between styles that are only apparently irreconcilable, and therefore contamination between art history and contemporary current affairs is possible. But is it really possible to bring these two opposing ways of conceiving art together? The answer must not be given by the artist, but must be given by every observer who stops his gaze on this work.
