My name is Abeer Maktabi, and I like to call myself an “Imagineer”. Throughout my career, I have worked in various design platforms, including advertising, fashion, graphic design and fine arts. I have always been fascinated by the power of imagination and the ability to bring ideas to life through different mediums. After a few years in the advertising industry, I felt the need to expand my horizons and explore other design platforms. I dabbled in fashion, creating unique and avant-garde designs that were featured in local fashion shows. I also delved into the world of craft, where I experimented with different techniques and mediums, from silkscreen to ceramics. These experiences allowed me to push the boundaries of my creativity and think outside the box. Currently, I am focusing on being a visual artist, creating esthetically imperfect art through weaving. I have always been drawn to the beauty in imperfections, and I strive to capture that in my artwork. My pieces are a reflection of my thoughts, emotions, and experiences, and each one tells a unique story. I find solace in the process of creating imperfect art, as it allows me to let go of the need for perfection and embrace the beauty in imperfection: whether it’s through asymmetrical lines or uneven shapes or discontinued patterns. The medium I use in most of my work is merino wool (RWS) blended with something rigid like a canvas, or wood or steel. Merging the worlds of soft and hard. I create wall hangings that represent nature, relationships, and personal growth. But no matter the subject, the power of hands remains a central theme in my work, as it is a universal symbol of love, connection, and nurturing. As a mother and a weaver, I am constantly amazed by the power of hands and the impact they have in our lives. And through my art, I hope to spread this appreciation and understanding to others.
